“Convenient adult”: where does the need to please everyone and be great come from?

What does it mean to be comfortable with everyone? The answer suggests itself immediately: to be what others want you to see. Don’t show true [uncomfortable] emotions, don’t follow your desires, don’t want too much, don’t be loud, an upstart. Have no internal boundaries, listen to what they tell you, “don’t perform.” Do not show yourself, do not appear visible. Always be open to help, to save, even if it goes against your own plans.
